Alexander Meigs Haig, Jr. (born December 2, 1924) was the first U.S. Secretary of State under Ronald Reagan, and is a former Four-Star General in the U.S. Army. He was appointed Military Assistant to the Presidential Assistant for National Security Affairs, Henry Kissinger, in 1969, a position he retained until 1970, when President Richard Nixon promoted him to Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. In 1973, Haig was appointed White House Chief of Staff where he remained until President Nixon's resignation in August 1974.
